Phonics: /ɛ/ Sound - Cristian, Jessica, Ricardo

The short /ɛ/ is a quick and relaxed sound. To pronounce it, the tongue rounds slightly upward and touches the top and bottom side teeth. The lips and jaw are loose and relaxed. This sound can be found for example, in the words get /gɛt/, fed /fɛd/, and set /sɛt/.

/ɛ/ - Game

Short e - Board Game

This is a game for 2-4 players. It requires the following board, a piece for every player and one dice.

How to play:

1.         Roll the dice to pick the first player. Whoever rolls the highest number goes first, and play then continues to the right side.

2.         Each player rolls the dice according to his/her turn, and moves that number of spaces from the starting point.

3.         White and yellow squares: Read aloud the word on the square. It is time to practice your pronunciation of the short e sound!

4.         Pink squares: Read aloud both words and choose the one that has the short /e/ sound. If you answer correctly, stay in the same square. If not, go back three spaces.

Rules:

1.    The winner will be the one who reaches the end point first.

2. Even if there is a winner, the other players can keep playing to discuss second, third and fourth place.

/ɛ/ - Short story

The selected video of a short story is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8TmnH_hBko&ab_channel=EnglishSingsing

The story starts with a boy called Kevin and his parents walking in the street. They pass near to a toy store where Kevin watches a jet and gets fascinated. He stares at it while his parents call him.

Narrator: Kevin wants a jet.

Kevin's father: Kevin!

Kevin's mother: Kevin!

Then, Kevin is seated bored and alone and starts thinking of the jet he saw:

Kevin: I can get the money for a jet.

He stands up happily and enters a farm. There, he sweeps the floor and cleans the window. Later, he takes a red hen and asks him to put eggs:

Kevin: Red hen, I want eggs please.

Kevin falls asleep as he waits for the eggs when suddenly, the red hen puts eggs:

Kevin: Egg, egg, egg, egg

Kevin collects a big amount of eggs in a plate and puts them in a table. An elf, elephant and elk let some money on the table and take some eggs.

Narrator: Elf is getting some eggs.

Elephant gets some eggs

Elk gets some eggs

Kevin: It's empty. And now, I can get a jet!

Kevin wakes up and realizes that the red hen did not put eggs and therefore he will not be able to buy the jet.

Kevin: No eggs?

Oh, no! My jet!
