Initial /f/ /m/ /s/ sound
• The /f/ sound (As in fish) is a voiceless labiodental fricative. To make this sound, place the lower lip slightly under the upper teeth. This sound is pronounced by letting breath seeps out between the edge of the teeth and the lower lip.
The sound /f/ is mostly represented by the letter f (as in fox). However, it is also represented by the letters ph (as in phone) and the letters gh in final position (as in laugh). (Blevins, 2006, p.72)
• The /m/ sound (As in map) is a voiced bilabial nasal. To make this sound, press the lips together lightly and vibrate slightly while the breath is emerging through the nasal passage.
The /m/ sound is represented by the letter m (as in mail). (Blevins, 2006, p.78)
• The /s/ sound (As in sea) is a voiceless alveolar fricative. To make this sound, place the blade of the tongue near the alveolar ridge. Then force air through the narrow groove formed by the tongue. The breath strikes the teeth to produce a hissing sound.
The /s/ sound is represented by the letter s (as in sun). However, other representation of the sound is with the letter c, when followed by i, e, or y (as in circle, cent, cycle, and face). (Blevins, 2006, p.82)
